Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports returns for spring split, offering career opportunities for students

31st January 2023.- Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports, the biggest esports competition aimed at university students in the UK & Ireland, has returned for the spring split to provide university students with tournament and career opportunities.


The competition returns after an exciting winter split which featured over 1,000 university teams from more than 100 UK universities, alongside dozens of community gaming events and many students getting their first work experience in the industry.


This split will see students compete in League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, CS:GO, Clash Royale, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Apex Legends and Rainbow Six Siege.


Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports is present in more than 20 countries on 4 continents, and has a strong educational component, offering university students both training opportunities and their first professional experiences within the sector.


New to the Spring Split


A new addition for this academic year is the University Leaderboard, a ranking system where every team and player can contribute to their university’s points total by taking part and winning games. After the Winter split, the University of Warwick is currently comfortably in the lead, but with the leaderboard continuing into Spring it still remains all to play for.


The new split also brings a new game, for the first time, Apex Legends has been added as a regular season tournament.


All of the tournaments start afresh for the Spring season, with teams playing regularly over eight weeks and competing to feature in the Grand Finals in March and April.


Players of League of Legends, VALORANT, Rocket League, Teamfight Tactics, and Clash Royale will have the opportunity to compete to represent Great Britain at Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports Masters, the on-site competition that brings together the best teams from 16 countries, who will seek to be crowned European champions at university level.

Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports’ mission is to bring awareness of the many employment opportunities emerging from the esports industry to students and contribute to their education. The first split of the competition included educational workshops and guest lectures with tools and training in some of these areas, which will continue in the second split. Workshop topics so far have included subjects such as marketing, branding, and community management, and will be built on in the Spring season with workshops and talks continuing these themes as well as discussing broadcast and events.


In addition to education and training, Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports will continue to offer dozens of paid roles for early-career esports broadcasters and league operations staff – helping support the pipeline of future esports professionals.


From virtual to on-site


In an environment that is mainly virtual, one of the objectives of Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports is to get closer to the student community through face-to-face events. That is why it is developing the UNIVERSITY Tour, a tour of multiple universities across the country, which aims to raise awareness of the competition, and provide students with a variety of experiences linked to the environment of esports and gaming.   


UNIVERSITY Tour is set to launch in the UK in Spring, visiting eight universities around the UK, to be announced soon.

Amazon launches the Alexa Young Innovator Challenge to help young people bridge the skills gap, as research shows demand for jobs that require computer science, AI or machine learning skills are expected to increase by 40% over the next five years

London, 8 November 2022 – Amazon has launched the inaugural Alexa Young Innovator Challenge, an educational programme for secondary school students aged 13 – 18 to create an Alexa Skill to promote social good in their community. Designed to inspire young people about the potential of AI, teachers and educators will be able to access free curriculum-linked lesson plans and materials to engage students, while supporting the development of AI learning in UK classrooms. By taking part, schools will have the chance to win prizes, including £2,500 worth of tech products for the winner and a £2,500 donation to their school. The 20 runners up will also receive an Amazon gift card to the value of £250, redeemable on and £500 will be donated to their school.


New research – commissioned by Amazon from YouGov – found that currently, 79% of STEM teachers have limited access to AI resources and 64% to computer science resources in general, highlighting the real difficulties schools face when trying to engage students in this vital field. Of the 72% of secondary school teachers surveyed who agree that schools should be making an active effort to increase education and resources around AI and computer science, three quarters (75%) say that without this, there will be long-term skill gaps.


YouGov’s research showed strong support for boosting AI learning in UK schools among secondary school teachers, students and parents, with 65% of secondary school teachers agreeing that AI should be part of their school’s syllabus, and 87% of the UK STEM teachers surveyed believing access to free AI and computer science learning resources linked with the national curriculum would help students better engage in computer science. 69% of all secondary school teachers believe that education in computer science better prepares students for future careers in all sectors.


By taking part in the Alexa Young Innovator Challenge, students will be able to explore the possibilities of using AI to help solve societal issues ranging from climate change and healthcare, to poverty and homelessness. Winners will be selected in two age categories, together with 20 runners-up, by judges including Technology Director at Amazon and UK Ambassador for Amazon Future Engineer, Lauren Kisser; YouTuber and computing graduate Tobi Brown, who is a member of The Sidemen; TV presenter and STEM education advocate, Carol Vorderman MBE; computer scientist and entrepreneur Professor Sue Black; and maths and computing prodigy, and Stemettes founder, Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon.

AI is ‘science fiction’ to one in three secondary school children


Teaching AI in secondary schools will also help the almost half (46%) of secondary school children surveyed who said they would like to know more about careers using computer science and AI. One third (33%) of secondary school children surveyed said they have only heard of AI in science fiction movies and literature.


To help remedy this, Amazon is also offering virtual Class Chats with schools across the UK, where Amazon leaders and current apprentices will share insights from their education, career journey, and discuss the future potential of AI with teachers and students. This comes as research reveals that 82% of secondary school teachers believe their students would be more interested in AI and computer science if they had the opportunity to speak to industry leaders in these sectors.

Amazon announce new virtual class tour dates after reaching over 20,000 students in their first year

Following last year’s hugely successful series of free Virtual Fulfilment Centre tours, Amazon has announced new tour dates aimed to educate students on the opportunities available to them in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers. The tours are part of Amazon Future Engineer, a purpose-led childhood-to-career programme built to inspire, educate and enable children and young adults from lower-income backgrounds to try computer science.


The Virtual Fulfilment Centre Tours, attended by over 20,000 students in 2021, are available to all primary and secondary schools across the UK, and are an engaging way to demonstrate the future world of work. Additionally, the free tours enable teachers to immerse their class in real-world learning without having to leave the classroom with the school trip style Virtual Fulfilment Centre tours from Amazon. 


On the tours, students will discover how computer science, state-of-the-art engineering and Amazon’s incredible employees all play a critical part in delivering customer orders every day. Amazon Future Engineer and the Virtual Fulfilment Centre school tours were established in response to research commissioned by Amazon in 2019 on the growing importance of STEM. Amazon is supporting teachers and young people with a new series of Virtual Fulfilment Centre Tours, which form part of Amazon Future Engineer, a purpose-led childhood-to-career programme designed to inspire, educate and enable children and young adults from low-income backgrounds to build careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).


This school year, Amazon is providing teachers with the chance to immerse their pupils in a real-world learning environment with their free Virtual Fulfilment Centre Tours. Students will discover how computer science, state-of-the-art engineering and incredible people each play a part in delivering customer orders at Amazon.


The free tours are now available to all UK primary and secondary schools and provide students with the opportunity to put STEM and computer science into context, covering topics such as cloud computing, algorithms, machine learning, and quality control. Young inventors challenged to change the world for the better with Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize

  • 64% of secondary teachers concerned that students have fallen behind in STEM with more than half (51%) worried that their year 7 students will not make up the lost ground of 2020 before they leave secondary school.

Embargoed until 00.01, Wednesday 11 November 2020 (London) – Nearly two-thirds (64%) of secondary school teachers in the UK are concerned that their students have fallen behind in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) as a result of Covid-19 and the associated lockdowns and teaching restrictions. Research conducted on behalf of the Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize found that more than half of secondary teachers (51%) are worried that their Year 7 students will not be able to make up the lost ground caused by this year’s disruption to their education by the time they leave secondary school.[1]

Two-thirds (66%) of secondary teachers say that Covid-19 restrictions are hampering their students’ ability to learn more practical subjects, like science and technology. A similar proportion (67%) say that practical lessons are more rewarding for their students over theory lessons, yet 57% have had to rely on theory and not practical lessons in science teaching so far this school year due to restrictions. More than half of teachers (54%) now believe the gap in understanding of science, technology, engineering and maths is beginning to grow.

The Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize (, delivered by Nesta Challenges, calls on young bright minds to put their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to the test, to create and develop technological innovations to help solve some of the biggest issues of our time. Young people aged 11-16 are encouraged to apply their creativity and ingenuity in four key areas: supporting people living independently in old age, helping people lead healthier lives, tackling climate change and pollution, and helping people stay better connected.

Now in its fourth year, and supported by Amazon for the first time, the Longitude Explorer Prize pairs classroom STEM learning with valuable entrepreneurial skills to help young innovators make their great ideas a reality. The Prize helps teachers easily incorporate the programme into lesson plans by providing an array of free online resources aligned with the school STEM and citizenship curriculum – adapted to the Covid-19 classroom restrictions schools currently face, including bubble teaching and remote digital learning.

Teams are asked to create solutions based on one of four prize themes:

  • Living Longer – technological solutions to support an ageing population
  • Living Healthier – technological solutions that help people live happier and healthier lives
  • Living Greener – technological solutions that tackle pollution and climate change; and
  • Living Together – technological solutions that help people stay better connected in a way that is easy, safe and environmentally friendly as well as solutions to deliver more sustainable transport.

Applications open today and will close at 5pm on 12 February 2021. Entry is free and is open to teams of between two and five young people from schools and youth groups across the UK. The top 40 teams will be selected for the final round early next summer (2021), where Amazon will provide expert mentoring on topics ranging from data analytics, software engineering, robotics, and app development to create prototypes of their concepts to determine the winner in July 2021. The winners will be awarded £20,000 for their school or youth group, and three teams of runners up will be awarded £5,000 each for their school or youth group.

Our industry mentor was an excellent coach who brought the very best out of the girls, guiding them to make decisions for themselves – something so valuable for teenagers to learn.”

The Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize aims to reach students across the UK and address the lack of diversity in STEM industries by providing young people from all backgrounds with an introduction to the possibilities of entrepreneurship in STEM and becoming the disruptors of the future. According to a report from EngineeringUK earlier this year, only 12% of engineers in the UK are women and, according to the Intellectual Property Office, fewer than 13% of patents are made by women. More than half (55%) of entrants to the 2020 Longitude Explorer Prize were girls.

Last year’s prize saw more than 800 young people compete in teams from across the UK. Ideas ranged from robotic fish that remove plastic from the ocean, drones that enable Wi-Fi access in disaster zones, secure AI-enabled rovers that deliver medicines to people who are unable to leave their homes, and map apps to help wheelchair users navigate level routes. The winners, a team of five teenagers from Greenford High School in West London, developed, designed and coded a smartwatch app called ‘Tomadachi’, to support people with dementia to live more independently. The app included features to help people find their way home if lost, an activity reminder tool and an easy-to-use interactive mood tracker – all linked to a secure accompanying app on their carer’s device.

This year, supporting STEM learning is vital, with structured and inspiring experiences that can be delivered in the classroom and online. Following the 2020 prize, which concluded in July, 93% of the finalists said they would now like to pursue a career in STEM. 98% of 2020 finalists were inspired to pursue entrepreneurialism. 91% of young people taking part in the 2020 prize said they learned new remote working skills as a result. 100% of teachers and youth leaders who entered a team in 2020 said they would enter a team in the future.

The 2020 prize moved online with remote mentoring and workshops as the country entered lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Teachers and youth leaders continued to engage and excite the young teams with all of the resources and support they needed, including access to technology for digitally excluded students and offline resources for all participants. That same support will continue for the 2021 prize.

Similarly, with many schools closed due to Covid-19 earlier this year, Amazon launched a free virtual coding programme to help build computer science skills for students learning at home. The company also partnered with universities and educational resource developers to launch Maths4All, an online storefront providing free, curriculum-linked primary maths resources.

The Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize is free to enter and take part in. Nesta Challenges provides resources, guidance and – for the 40 finalist teams – mentoring, hardware and tailored workshops all aligned to school curriculums. Teams must comprise 2-5 young people aged 11-16. Schools and youth groups are encouraged to enter multiple teams in the prize.
