The Educated Choices Program is a US-based 501c3 academic organization that offers free educational programs to schools and communities worldwide, discussing the impact of food choices on human and planetary health. We have reached over 3.5 million students in 51 countries and are growing rapidly each year, now offering programs in 3 languages.
Our free digital education packages are designed for ages 12+ and offer engaging and informative videos accompanied by lesson plans, quizzes, discussion prompts and activities to make integration into the teacher’s curriculum seamless. Our programs also meet academic standards in all 50 US states.
In our program resources, we address the many ways that individual food choices and our current food system contribute to not only human health issues, such as common chronic diseases but also planetary health issues, such as deforestation, water pollution, air pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change. We also discuss food innovation and the science behind alternative proteins. These topics are covered non-judgmentally and inclusively, offering accessible dietary alternatives and tools and encouraging incremental and approachable change.
All of ECP’s free educational programs undergo a review process by their internal ARDI (Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee) to ensure that they are representative of and sensitive to the cultures and beliefs of their audiences. They are also reviewed to ensure that suggestions for more healthful and sustainable food choices are accessible to all audiences by featuring not just fresh but frozen and canned foods, including foods that can be found by students who may be located in food desserts. Additionally, we provide resources such as lists of local food banks that offer fresh produce and other healthy items. Finally, video accessibility is tested to ensure that students who may have difficulty learning visually or audibly can equally access and understand the presented material.
In an age where young people are bombarded with false dietary claims through marketing campaigns designed with sales as a priority as opposed to health and environmental sustainability, it is crucial that students learn the scientific facts about food in a place where they are already poised to learn: in the classroom.

LearnPhonics! uses an interactive and engaging approach to teaching phonics, ensuring that children are fully participating so that they are able to make rapid progress in their reading and writing. The planning includes multisensory teaching strategies to appeal to all types of learners and to improve memory, and each lesson follows the same routine so that teachers and children know what is coming next. Teacher workload is reduced as there are no resources to prep before the lesson - the ActivInspire Flipchart slides contain everything you need.
The complete scheme comes with 410 lessons spanning over 82 weeks, beginning with simple, single sounds and basic encoding and decoding skill development, finishing with more complex GPCs and grammar rules.
A thorough assessment tool using Excel is also included as well as Keep Up planning and a wide variety of downloadable resources such as displays, worksheets etc. The progression of the scheme matches the Junior Learning Decodable Books.

The toolkits have been designed to bring contemporary research into GCSE and A-level classrooms in ways that support the current biology curriculum.
The toolkits include:
1. he Cell Explorer: online interactive 3D model allowing students to investigate the structure of eukaryotic cells, their organelles and cellular processes. This online resource includes a 3D model of an animal cell and a plant cell and 3D interactive animations of cell division.
2. Explore Epigenetics: toolkit for teaching epigenetics at A-level (or equivalent)
3. Fruit Fly Larvae Dissection: dissection toolkit for teaching about the size and scale of cells, tissues and organs.
4. Unlocking Genetic Editing: team-based puzzle-solving activity for reviewing transcription, translation, the structures of DNA and RNA and introducing gene editing
(Toolkits 3 & 4 are physical kits that can be rented free of charge subject to availability).
The Gurdon Institute are working with educators to further expand the resources and toolkits available.
In addition to helping teach the required curriculum, we hope these toolkits will enable students to think critically about science, understand the value and relevance of the topics they are studying, and see research as a pertinent and attractive career choice.
Through the co-creation process, we hope we have fostered the development of a professional network between scientists and teachers, allowing scientists to develop a greater understanding of how their research fits in with and is perceived by the education system and enabling teachers to deepen their knowledge of fundamental biology and current research techniques.
This project was funded by Wellcome. Its process and outcomes are being evaluated by the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. The Gurdon Institute Public Engagement Team coordinated the project.
