As we like to say at Independent Thinking, 25 years old this year, we use our words.
Whether it’s through speaking to children, students, teachers, school leaders and more the world over, or through our award-winning books and resources, we aim to use those words to reassure educators everywhere that there is always another way.
No matter what they tell you.
Independent Thinking is unique in a number of ways, especially in our collaboration with Crown House Publishing to create the Independent Thinking Press. Through this cooperation, we bring into print the words of some of the UK’s most inspiring and entertaining educational speakers, thinkers, innovators, practitioners and, yes, let’s use that word, mavericks.
It’s not our job to tell you what to do – the clue’s in the name – but rather to take your brain for a walk and to help you see yourself, them, education and the world with new eyes, new enthusiasm and new possibilities.
That way education moves forward and does so with people, not data, at its heart.
I do hope you enjoy our words, however you come across them.
We can’t do it without you.
Ian Gilbert, Founder of Independent Thinking Ltd.

LifeGames was developed after initial research revealed a distinct lack of essential life skills development in our current education system, with teachers struggling to cope with increased behavioural issues as a direct result.
The LifeGames free downloadable app and introductory book were developed by our team of specialists in child care and education, delivering a collection of fun and engaging classroom activities and games specially designed to address these shortfalls.
Following on from a successful pilot programme involving 51 schools across the UK and Ireland in early 2019, the LifeGames app and book were launched in September 2019.
Available as a free app on Google Play and the App Store, and an introductory book entitled ‘Introducing LifeGames’ on Amazon, LifeGames is a collection of fun and engaging classroom activities and games, organised into 5 key categories: Self, Community, World, Social Skills and Problem Solving, aimed at children of ages 3-12.
The free LifeGames app comes preloaded with a collection of 40+ classroom activities and games for three age groups (3-5, 6-9, 10-12), covering key areas such as empathy, respect, responsibility, problem solving, conflict resolution, effective communication and confidence.
A further 320+ activities and games are accessible via the LifeGames app and a variety of packages are available to suit even the most thinly stretched educational budget.

ReallySchool is a brand new solution developed with primary school teachers and TAs to help them capture and record pupils’ learning experiences in the classroom, while saving time and promoting parental engagement.
Add or capture photos
Access current assessment criteria
One click for a detailed student view
View a range of class reports
Add audio notes
Create student journals
Share achievements and progress with parents
ReallySchool is already helping teachers to save precious time in the classroom by eliminating the endless task of sticking photos into workbooks, adding handwritten notes and linking assessment criteria. Instead, its flexible app allows teachers and TAs to capture photos and videos direct from their device or add existing ones to a child's record. They can add written or voice notes to observations as they occur, as well as see progress timelines highlighting at a glance those who are secure, developing or emerging in their key skills or, alternatively, where assessments are still required or there are gaps that need to be addressed.
Easy to use
ReallySchool stands apart from other solutions due to its flexibility. From adding or removing pupils from observations on the fly – and even changing the criteria mid-assessment if they have noticed a pupil has done something additional to the current topic – its intuitive interface means teachers can use it quickly and without training.
Plus, with one click, ReallySchool makes it easy to share a child’s progress with parents (via their version of the app) to encourage further interaction and involvement in their learning.
Current criteria and frameworks (EYFS, KS1, Foundation Phase, KS2, Pre-key stage standards, PScales, CoEL, ECaT and EYDJ) are built into ReallySchool for convenience for teachers to assess against. Plus, extra assessment criteria can be added on the fly, as well as recording whether the activity was child-initiated, part of a guided group or adult-led. You can even include students from other classes for group work.

Traditional expense management processes are a poor fit for the daily running of a school. Credit cards are only appropriate for senior employees, it's unfair to ask staff to front funds for later reimbursement, and cash advances are admin-heavy. On top of that, it's hard to see and control all costs. But there is a smarter way.
With Soldo, staff and volunteers make payments on prepaid Mastercard® cards. Admins can send money to cards in a click. Budgets and rules provide complete spending control. And the receipt capture app makes reporting effortless. It means:
* Empower staff & volunteers can make purchases their work requires
* Administrators can set budgets and spending limits
* Management can control spend and gain complete visibility
But don’t just take our word for it. . .
“Since adopting Soldo we have found the spend on discretionary operational expenses is tracking at or below plan. Previously, we had frequent overspend on operational expenses because our staff did not have real-time visibility of where they were with their budgets. We also have fewer instances where supporting paperwork is missing and senior managers time is not spend constantly approving daily spend that is needed for the school to operate smoothly. Our accountants are also pleased with the solution because they spend less time on manual bookkeeping.” Peter Melbye, Dania School
